I work for the Western Isles NHS, within the Health Promotion Department, as Fas Fallain Manager. The post covers all the Islands from Lewis to Barra, addressing all issues relating to health inequalities and rural poverty as well as encouraging communities to grow their own fresh, affordable produce. When I joined the Poverty Alliance board poverty was not as high on peoples’ agenda as it is now; raising the issue was challenging as there was a perception that it did not exist on the Western Isles. However, this changed following a visit from Poverty Alliance who ran an awareness raising training course. The training subsequently led to the formation of the Western Isles Poverty Action Group who have been instrumental in addressing issues relating to poverty at a local level and more recently the Outer Hebrides Community Planning Partnership have committed to the development of the first Western Isles Anti-Poverty Strategy.
