Warning of Low Pay Increase
A ‘perfect storm’ of cuts in public spending and a more punitive welfare system could lead to an increase in the number of low paid workers in Scotland and push more families and children into poverty. The warning comes at a major conference as the Scottish Living Wage Campaign publishes a report on low pay in Scotland and up-rates the Scottish living wage from £7.00 to £7.15 per hour. Commenting on the announcement in the Queens Speech of yet another Welfare Reform Bill, the Scottish Campaign on Welfare Reform have welcomed the focus on a radical simplification of the benefits system - but only as long as that doesn’t result in financial losers, warning that cuts by the back door would be vigorously opposed.

Scottish Enterprise today became the latest employer to be given a Stage 1 Scottish Living Wage Employer Award following the announcement that all directly employed staff are to be paid above £7 an hour. (19.03.10)

SCOWR hits out at “pay for snitching” proposal
Poverty Alliance along with other members of the Scottish Campaign on Welfare Reform have hit out at proposals by Jim Murphy to pay for “snitching" on benefit cheats, arguing that the extent of benefit fraud is exaggerated whilst the real issues like lack of investment good quality jobs and the below poverty level benefits have been ignored.

POVERTY ALLIANCE WELCOMES NEW CHILD POVERTY BILL
The new bill will require the UK government to prepare a UK wide strategy to tackle child poverty - with the aim of reducing the numbers of children in poverty in the UK to less than 10% by 2020.
