The intention is to create a discussion that will inform the

Without winning over larger parts of the public to
support the fight against poverty in the UK we will never
be able to put in place all the policies needed to make the
kind of change required. This has been an argument voiced
in recent years by increasing numbers of politicians and voluntary
organisations who are concerned about poverty in the UK. Some
have been inspired by the mass support for the Make Poverty
History campaign in 2005, which lead to very public displays
of support for tackling global poverty. |

Households Below Average Incomes (HBAI) is the main data source
the UK Government uses to monitor trends in low incomes. The
figures give an indication of the impact of a variety of Government
policies, and are used to directly measure progress in the
Governments commitments to eradicate child poverty.
The most recent edition of HBAI was published in March 2005
and covers the period 2003/04. This briefing sets out the
main findings relating to Scotland and highlights some of
the key comparisons with the rest of the UK. |
