‘MOVING ON’ – A Peer Education Project for Young People

Aims to develop the capacity of young people who are currently experiencing poverty and social exclusion (for example young people in the NEET group (not in employment, education or training).

Young people are involved as peer educators gaining confidence to articulate the needs of young people to relevant professionals and policy makers. In addition, the peer educators provide and deliver accessible information in appropriate ways to young people in the target areas, on the choices that are available to them as they move on from school to employment, training or further education.

The project also raises awareness of poverty facing young people amongst policy and decision makers at national and local levels, professionals working with young people in schools, social services, career services and further education establishments.

Bridging the Policy Gap - from National Policy to Local Implementation
Bridging the Policy Gap is a European funded project that will be operating for 12 months from January 2007. The project is based at The Poverty Alliance in Glasgow.

The project will assess the implementation of a specific social policy or initiative. In particular, the project will examine how the implementation of the policy helped meet the stated aims of that policy, what worked well and what could have been improved.

The method that will be employed to discuss these issues is known as a ‘Peer Review’. The Review is an intensive 2 day session that allows for an open dialogue to identify existing strengths as well as any areas for improvement. Peer Reviews will occur in Glasgow, Swansea and Newham. Participants will be drawn from various levels of government, the social and voluntary sector, operational staff who are familiar with the policy under review and people whose lives are affected by the policy. The involvement of this last group is at the heart of the project.

The goals of the project are as follows:
a) To raise awareness of European Social Inclusion Processes;
b) To demonstrate the value of open and participatory dialogue in the formulation and implementation of social inclusion policy in the UK;
c) To examine successful social inclusion policy and to extract transferable lessons to help improve implementation of social policy in other areas; and
d) To contribute to the mainstreaming of participation in monitoring and evaluation processes associated within the framework of the National Action Plan on Social Inclusion (NAP).
