Monitoring poverty and social
exclusion in Scotland 2006
The New Policy Institute has produced its
2006 edition of indicators of poverty and social exclusion
in Scotland providing a comprehensive analysis of trends over
time and differences between groups. It covers both devolved
and non-devolved areas of responsibility. In summary, there
has been substantial progress in poverty among children and
pensioners but not among working-age adults. There remain
substantial problems in Scotland's ill-health and low educational
achievement by many children.

Respect and renewal: a study
of neighbourhood social regeneration
This study looks at the outcomes of a programme
of work that investigated the nature of social exclusion in
deprived council estates and neighbourhoods and explored the
use of 'soft regeneration' strategies to revitalise them.
It sets these results against the progress of wider national
policies and programmes to help poor people and places.

Understanding
the mixed economy of welfare
Although state provision may have dominated
in Britain since 1945, there is a growing movement towards
welfare pluralism - a mixed economy of welfare - involving
private, voluntary and informal sectors. This book, written
by social policy and welfare experts, sheds light on this
neglected area of social policy.

Voices of people experiencing
poverty in ScotlandVoices of people experiencing poverty
in Scotland
While there are lots of statistics
available on poverty in Scotland, the voices of people living
in poverty are largely missing from policy debates. This
research, by Mhoraig Green on behalf of a group of Scottish
charities, aims to ensure that the voices of people living
in poverty are heard as policies to tackle poverty and disadvantage
in Scotland are developed.

Changing neighbourhoods:
The impact of 'light touch' support in 20 communities
The past ten years have seen a range of
new policies to close the gap between the most disadvantaged
neighbourhoods and the rest of society &ndash in England,
Scotland and Wales. All these programmes have emphasised
the need to engage citizens at neighbourhood level in achieving
change. It was against this background that, in 2002, the
Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) launched its Neighbourhood
Programme to support community groups and organisations
in 20 neighbourhoods across the three countries. This summary,
written by the team evaluating the programme, highlights
the key findings from the four-year programme.

Society at a Glance: OECD
Social Indicators - 2006 Edition
Social problems rarely have a single
cause. For example, tackling social exclusion involves simultaneously
addressing barriers to labour market integration, health
problems and low education. Coping with an ageing society
requires new approaches to health care and employment, as
well as to pensions. Social indicators provide the broad
perspective needed for any international comparison and
assessment of social trends, outcomes and policies.

The research was based on detailed interviews
with participants from 24 low income households in Thornaby
on Tees, in the North East of England. The project worked

are getting by. In addition to the interviews, the project
also carried out some participatory research and an analysis
